Sports are a major part of American life, and indeed the interest in organized athletics is global. From grade school basketball teams to the National Football League to the Olympics, people everywhere celebrate athletic achievement and enjoy cheering on and participating in sports. Sports provide exercise and entertainment, and they satisfy the competitive urge.

In America, children learn to love sports from an early age. In elementary school, students usually must take a physical education (P.E.) class each year, in which they play everything from dodgeball to flag football. During the recess period, many students play handball or tag, a running game. Games such as tag, which few would consider a sport, are the foundation of sports because they are about competition and movement at their most primal (but harmless) level.

In middle school and high school, students can join organized teams in sports such as basketball, baseball, football, and tennis, and even sports such as golf, soccer, and swimming where facilities and equipment permit. Schools compete against each other, and it becomes a point of pride for the people in the town. They root for the local school's team, especially if their children are playing.

Sports are fun to watch as well as play, and there is a lot of money to be made from marketing the games (and even gambling on the results through local pools and online sports betting). This has led to the creation of organizations like the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA), professional organizations with full-time, highly-paid players. All-star players in high school may receive scholarships to play on college teams, and success in college play may lead to being drafted by one of these professional organizations. This drive for fame and unimaginable fortune makes many young players push themselves to the limit.

Shin Ji-Yai Ranked No. 1 In Women's Golf
© Easywebsites.ky
22 year old professional golfer, Shin Ji-Yai has reclaimed the number one spot in the world rankings for women's golf. Shin Ji-Yai, who is originally from South Korea, recently competed in the Evian Masters in France and winning against Japan's Ai Miyazato.

Those in the golfing industry are very impressed with Shin Ji-Yai's talent at such a young age. The mature golf player has been in first place in the rankings for several weeks since the former number one player, Lorena Ochoa retired. However, Shin Ji-Yai is worked hard in receiving the rank, winning three titles in the season and now another at the Evian Masters in France.

Shin Ji-Yai will hopefully continue to play golf for a number of years and it'll be interesting to see if she can maintain the prestigious ranking as number one.
